What Is a DVLA Registered Number Plate Supplier?
21 October 2026 · 2 min read
Anyone selling road-legal number plates in England, Scotland and Wales must be on the DVLA's Register of Number Plate Suppliers (RNPS). PlatedUp is a DVLA registered supplier. Here's what that means for you.
Why the register exists
Before the register, it was easy for criminals to get copies of someone else's plates and use them to disguise stolen cars or dodge fines. Registered suppliers must check that every customer is entitled to the registration before making plates.
What a registered supplier must do
- See proof of entitlement to the registration, such as a V5C.
- See proof of identity, such as a photocard driving licence.
- Keep records of every sale for a set time, so plates can be traced.
- Make plates that meet the British Standard BS AU 145e.
Why it matters to you
- Your plates will be legal. No nasty surprises at your MOT or at the side of the road.
- It protects you from cloning. The checks make it harder for someone to get copies of your registration.
- You get proper quality. Plates are tested for strength, reflectivity and durability.
Watch out for
Sellers who don't ask for any documents for road-legal plates, plates without the supplier's name and postcode, and "show plates" sold for road use.
At PlatedUp, you can upload your documents at checkout or send them later. Ready to go? Build your plates.
