3D Gel vs 4D Number Plates: Which Should You Choose?
8 October 2026 · 2 min read
3D gel and 4D are the two most popular raised plate styles in the UK. Both are road legal when made to BS AU 145e, and both look far better than a flat printed plate. So which one is right for you?
3D gel plates
On a 3D gel plate, a clear resin gel is applied over each black character. The gel sets into a smooth, domed bubble that gives the letters a glossy, rounded look.
- Look: soft, shiny and smooth
- Feel: rounded edges
- Best for: a clean upgrade that looks great on any car
4D plates
On a 4D plate, each character is laser-cut from solid black acrylic and bonded to the plate. The edges are sharp and square.
- Look: crisp, bold and sharp-edged
- Feel: flat top with straight sides
- Best for: a modern, aggressive look, especially on sports and performance cars
Can't decide? Have both
Our 5mm gel and 7mm gel plates combine the two: thick acrylic characters topped with a glossy gel finish. You get the depth of 4D and the shine of gel. The 7mm gel is the deepest, most eye-catching plate we make.
Quick comparison
- Most subtle: 3D Gel
- Sharpest edges: 4D 3mm or 4D 5mm
- Most depth and shine: 5mm Gel or 7mm Gel
