Are Number Plate Borders Legal?
26 October 2026 · 2 min read
A thin border around your number plate can make it look neater and more finished. But are borders legal? Yes, as long as they don't break the rules.
What's allowed
- A thin border around the edge of the plate
- A border that doesn't cover or crowd the characters
- Borders that keep the required margin around the registration clear
What's not allowed
- Borders thick enough to make the characters harder to read
- Patterns or pictures that spread into the background behind the characters
- Anything that makes the plate harder for ANPR cameras to read
Why choose a border?
- It frames the registration and makes the plate look finished.
- A black border pairs especially well with 4D plates and gel plates.
- It can hide a slightly uneven fit against the car.
