How to Design Your Own Number Plates Online (Step by Step)
4 November 2026 · 2 min read
You don't need to visit a shop to get new number plates. With an online number plate designer, you can build your plates on your phone, see exactly how they'll look, and order in a few minutes. Here's how ours works.
1. Choose your plate size
Open the plate builder and pick a size first, because it changes the shape:
- Standard: the usual 520 × 111mm car plate
- Hex: cut to fit your registration, with pointed ends
- Motorbike: 9 × 7 in on two lines, rear only
- 4x4 / Import: an 11 × 8 in square plate on two lines
2. Road legal or show plate?
Choose Road Legal for plates you'll drive with. Choose Show Plate if you want any text you like, for a car show, your garage wall or a gift. Show plates are not road legal.
3. Type your registration
Type your reg and the designer applies the legal spacing for you, in the legal font. For show plates, type whatever you like (up to 12 characters).
4. Pick a style
Switch between styles and watch the live preview change:
- Standard 2D: flat, crisp print
- 3D Gel: raised, glossy gel letters
- 4D 3mm and 4D 5mm: laser-cut acrylic letters
- 5mm Gel and 7mm Gel: deep letters topped with gel
5. Add the finishing touches
In Additions, choose a flag (UK or England), the green strip for electric cars, or a black border. You can also add a fixing kit with sticky pads or screws.
6. Order and upload your documents
Add your plates to the basket and check out. For road-legal plates, the law says we must see proof you're entitled to the registration (such as your V5C) and photo ID. You can upload them at checkout. Read which documents you need.
Order before 2pm on a working day and we'll make and dispatch your plates the same day.
