Dark Nights Are Here: Are Your Number Plates Up to It?

1 November 2026 · 2 min read

N1GHTSHOW PLATE · NOT FOR ROAD USE

The clocks have gone back, and more of your driving now happens in the dark. That's when number plates really have to do their job, and when worn-out plates get noticed.

Why plates matter more in winter

Number plates are reflective so they light up in headlights and on cameras. Old, faded or dirty plates reflect much less light, making them harder to read for the police and ANPR cameras. That can mean a fine.

Your 2-minute winter check

  1. Clean both plates and look at them from a few metres away. Can you read them easily?
  2. Check the colours. Is the white still bright and the yellow still yellow?
  3. Look for cracks, peeling or cloudiness.
  4. Check your rear plate light. Get someone to look while the lights are on. A blown bulb is an offence and an MOT fail.
  5. Check the fixings. Loose plates rattle, crack and can fall off.

Keep them clean through winter

Road salt and spray build up fast. Rinse your plates regularly and give them a quick wipe when you fill up with fuel or charge. More tips in our cleaning guide.

Time for a new set?

Modern plates made to BS AU 145e are tested for reflectivity, so a new set makes a real difference at night. Order before 2pm on a working day and we'll dispatch the same day. Get new plates.
