Number Plates for Leased and Company Cars
28 October 2026 · 2 min read
If your car is leased, on finance through a lease company, or provided by your employer, you probably don't have the V5C logbook. It's usually kept by the leasing or fleet company. So how do you get new plates?
The document you need
Instead of the V5C, you can use a letter of authorisation from the fleet, lease or hire company. It should:
- Be on the company's letterhead
- Name you or confirm you're authorised to order plates
- Quote the document reference number from the vehicle's V5C
You'll also need your own photo ID, such as a driving licence. See our full guide on accepted documents.
Check your agreement first
Some lease and company car agreements have rules about changing parts of the car, including number plates. It's worth checking before you order a different style like 4D or gel. A like-for-like replacement is usually fine.
How to order
- Ask your lease or fleet company for a letter of authorisation.
- Build your plates in our plate builder.
- Upload the letter and your ID at checkout, or send them later.
We'll make your plates as soon as we have everything, and dispatch the same day if it's in before 2pm on a working day.
