Just Bought a Private Plate? Here's How to Get Your Plates Made

Congratulations on your new private plate! Before you can show it off, there are a couple of steps to get it onto your car and get legal plates made.
Step 1: Assign the registration to your car
When you buy a private registration, you'll usually receive a V750 certificate of entitlement (or a V778 retention document if it was previously on another car). You can assign it to your car online on GOV.UK. Once it's assigned, the DVLA will send you an updated V5C logbook.
Don't fit the new plates until the registration has been assigned to your car. Driving with a registration that isn't assigned to your vehicle is an offence.
Step 2: Get your plates made
To make road-legal plates, a registered supplier needs to see proof you're entitled to the registration and photo ID. You can use your V750 or V778, or your V5C once it arrives, plus a photo ID like your driving licence. Read our full guide on the documents you need.
Step 3: Choose a style that does it justice
A private plate deserves more than a basic print. Popular choices include:
- 4D 5mm plates for a sharp, bold look
- 7mm gel plates for maximum depth and shine
- A flag badge or a green strip if your car is electric
Keep it legal
It's tempting to tweak the spacing to make a name clearer, but changing the spacing is illegal and can get the registration withdrawn by the DVLA. Every plate we make uses the correct legal spacing.
