Stolen Number Plates: What to Do Next
18 October 2026 · 2 min read
Number plate theft is on the rise. Criminals use stolen plates to disguise other cars, which means you could end up with someone else's speeding tickets, parking fines or worse. If your plates have gone, act quickly.
1. Report it to the police
Report the theft to the police straight away (use 101, or report online, as it's not an emergency) and get a crime reference number. This is your proof if fines start arriving in your name.
2. Tell your insurer
Let your insurance company know, and give them the crime reference number.
3. Watch out for fines
If you receive fines or penalty notices for places you weren't, contact the issuing authority with your crime reference number. Keep copies of everything.
4. Get replacement plates
You'll need new plates before you drive. A DVLA registered supplier must see your V5C (or other proof of entitlement) and photo ID, which is one of the ways the system stops criminals from getting copies of your plates. See which documents you need.
5. Make them harder to steal
- Fit plates with both sticky pads and screws.
- Use anti-theft or one-way screws, which are very hard to undo.
- Park in well-lit areas or use a driveway where you can.
