How Long Do Number Plates Last?
22 October 2026 · 2 min read
There's no set expiry date for number plates. A good-quality set made to BS AU 145e can last for many years, but how long yours last depends on what they go through.
What wears plates out
- Sunlight, which can fade colours over time
- Stones and road debris, especially on the front plate
- Car washes and jet washers used too close
- Road salt in winter
- Knocks from parking and bumps
Signs it's time to replace them
- Cracks or chips
- Faded, washed-out yellow or white
- Peeling at the edges
- Cloudy or yellowed gel on gel plates
- Characters that are hard to read from a distance
If someone would struggle to read your plate from a short distance, it's time for a new set. Unreadable plates can get you fined.
Which styles last longest?
Modern plates made to BS AU 145e are tested for durability, so a quality set should last well. 4D plates are especially tough because the characters are solid acrylic, so there's no printing to fade or peel.
Make them last longer
- Wash gently with car shampoo and a soft cloth.
- Keep the jet wash at a distance.
- Rinse off winter salt.
