Cracked Number Plate? Here's What to Do
27 October 2026 · 2 min read
A small crack in your number plate might not seem like a big deal, but it can quickly become one. Cracks spread, and a plate that's hard to read can mean a fine or an MOT fail.
Why plates crack
- Stones flicked up from the road, especially on the front plate
- Over-tightened screws, which put stress on the plastic
- Parking bumps and knocks
- Cold weather, which makes acrylic more brittle
- Old age, as plates get weaker over time
Can I just tape or glue it?
It's best not to. Repairs rarely last, can make the plate harder to read, and won't fix the problem for your MOT. A new, properly made plate is the right fix, and it's quick to order.
How to avoid it next time
- Don't over-tighten screws. Firm is enough.
- Use sticky pads as well as, or instead of, screws to spread the load.
- Choose quality plates made to BS AU 145e, which are tested for impact resistance.
