A flag badge on the left of your number plate is a simple way to add a bit of personality. But not every flag is allowed. Here's what's legal in the UK.

Flags you can show

  • The Union flag (often called the Union Jack)
  • The Cross of St George (England)
  • The Cross of St Andrew, also known as the Saltire (Scotland)
  • The Red Dragon of Wales

Letters you can show with them

The flag can sit above a national identifier, such as:

  • UK with the Union flag
  • ENG with the Cross of St George
  • SCO with the Saltire
  • CYM with the Red Dragon of Wales

The rules

  • The flag must sit on the left-hand side of the plate, above any letters.
  • The badge mustn't be wider than 50mm.
  • Other flags, sports team crests and logos are not allowed on road-legal plates.

Driving abroad

Since September 2021, cars from the UK driving abroad need to show UK rather than GB. A plate showing the UK identifier with a Union flag usually covers this, but rules vary from country to country, so always check the latest GOV.UK advice before you travel.

Flags we offer

At PlatedUp you can add the UK flag or the England flag to any of our plates.

Flag or green strip?

You can have one badge on the left of the plate: either a flag or a green flash for electric cars. Choose the one that suits your car in the Additions tab of our plate builder.
