Since December 2020, drivers of zero-emission vehicles in the UK have been able to add a green flash to their number plates: a green strip on the left-hand side of the plate.

Who can have a green flash?

Only vehicles that produce zero emissions from the exhaust, which in practice means fully electric cars and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. Hybrids and plug-in hybrids don't qualify, because they have an engine that produces emissions.

Is it compulsory?

No, it's completely optional. Many EV drivers choose it because it shows the car is electric at a glance, and some local councils have explored perks for zero-emission vehicles, such as cheaper parking, that a green flash could make easier to spot.

Can I have a flag with a green flash?

No. There's only room for one badge on the left of the plate, so you choose either the green strip or a flag, not both.

Does it work with 3D and 4D plates?

Absolutely. You can add a green strip to any of our styles, from standard printed plates to 4D and gel. It's a great match for modern EVs like a Tesla, Porsche Taycan or BMW i4.

How to add one
