How to Fit Number Plates: Sticky Pads or Screws?

F1T MESHOW PLATE · NOT FOR ROAD USE

Good news: you don't need a garage to fit new number plates. With the right fixing kit, most people can do it in about 15 minutes.

Sticky pads or screws?

Sticky pads are the most popular choice, especially for 3D gel and 4D plates, because they keep the front of the plate clean with no screw heads breaking up the look. They work best on a flat, clean surface.

Screws are the most secure option. They're good if your car already has screw holes, or if the surface behind the plate isn't flat. We supply screws with matching caps that blend in with the plate.

Both: many people use pads to hold the plate flat and screws for extra security.

How to fit with sticky pads

  1. Remove the old plate, gently, with a plastic trim tool if it's stuck on.
  2. Clean the surface with soapy water, then wipe it with a little rubbing alcohol. It must be completely dry and grease-free.
  3. Peel the backing off the pads and stick them to the back of the new plate, spread evenly with some near the edges.
  4. Line the plate up straight, then press firmly all over for 30 seconds.
  5. Try not to wash the car for 24 hours so the pads can bond.

How to fit with screws

  1. Line the new plate up with the existing holes and mark through them.
  2. Carefully drill small pilot holes through the plate where you marked.
  3. Screw the plate on firmly, but don't over-tighten or the plate could crack.
  4. Pop the matching caps over the screw heads.
