Show Plates Explained: What You Can and Can't Do
9 October 2026 · 2 min read
A show plate is a number plate made for display rather than the road. You can put almost any text on it: your name, your business, a nickname or a favourite saying, with whatever spacing you like.
Where can you use a show plate?
Show plates are made for off-road use only, for example:
- Car shows and meets
- Displays at home, in a garage or man cave
- Photoshoots and social media
- Showrooms and business displays
- Gifts for car lovers
Can you drive with a show plate?
No. Show plates don't follow the legal rules for fonts, spacing and registrations, so they must never be fitted to a car on a public road. Doing so can lead to a fine of up to £1,000 and an MOT failure. Every show plate we make is clearly marked as a show plate.
Do show plates need documents?
No. Because they're not road legal, you don't need to send a V5C or ID.
